IntroductionAfter the official abolition of slavery in 1865 due to the ratification of the 13th Amendment, the 14th and 15th Amendments were soon ratified to ensure citizenship and civil rights to freed slaves. This success was soon reversed by the black codes instituted into various states, strictly regulating the freedmen, allowing states to virtually recreate slavery without risk of persecution.
